and the New Year

Sacrifice

“Not their flesh, nor their blood, reaches Allah, but to Him is acceptable observance of duty on your part" (Holy Qur’an, 22:37).

This week, Muslims around the world will take part in the annual sacrifice of ‘Id ul-Adha. In the above verse, the Holy Qur’an shows that the sacrifice does not consist of the act of shedding the blood of an animal or eating its meat. The principle of sacrifice finds a deeper meaning in Islam; it signifies the sacrifice of the sacrificer himself, and thus becomes an outward symbol of his readiness to lay down his life and to sacrifice all his interests and desires in the cause of truth. The animal that is sacrificed really stands for the animal within him, a symbol of his lower desires.

Fireworks and the New Year

Many of us hold the tradition to end the old year and start the New Year with fireworks as a means “to chase away devils.” Have you ever noticed the behaviour of your dog, cat or other animals, when setting off fireworks? When they get the chance, they take refuge within your house! So, will the “devils” not take the same path? In order to get the so-called devils out of our houses, should we not let off the fireworks within the house?

As a matter of fact, fireworks are a waste of time, money, and the environment, and they often disturb those among us who need rest, in particular, the old and the sick. How can we intend to have a better year, to be better for ourselves, our fellow humans, the nature and environment around us, and start the year by bringing harm to all of these?

The only way to chase away devils is by evaluating our behaviour. What devilish deeds have we done in the past year, which we should refrain from in the future? Have we done enough in order to have a better physical and spiritual future? On which points should we improve?

This year, the coincidence of the yearly sacrifice and the start of the New Year is a special event. It gives us the opportunity to further evaluate our deeds from the past year. The Holy Qur’an states that everything which we send forward for ourselves (our deeds) is registered, and also it is what we leave behind for posterity. Furthermore, it states that every soul should ponder about what it sends forth:

“Surely We (Allah) write down that which they send before and their footprints, and We record everything in a clear writing” (36:12).

“O you who believe, keep your duty to Allah, and let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the morrow, and keep your duty to Allah. Surely Allah is Aware of what you do” (59:18).

As said already, the beginning of a new year is a good time for us to reflect and ponder about our actions. Have we done enough in order to have a better future, both in this world and in the hereafter? And what example are we leaving behind for others, when our time here on earth has ended? These are the points on which we will ultimately be judged.

en het nieuwe jaar

Offeren

“Niet hun vlees, noch hun bloed bereikt Allah, maar door Hem wordt aanvaard dat jullie aan je plicht voldoen” (Koran, 22:37).

Deze week zullen moslims overal ter wereld deelnemen aan het jaarlijkse offerfeest ('Id ul-Adha). In bovenvermeld vers geeft de Koran aan, dat het offeren niet bestaat uit de daad van het vergieten van het bloed van een dier of het zich voeden met zijn vlees. Het beginsel van het offer in de Islam heeft een diepere betekenis. Het betekent het offeren van de offeraar zélf en wordt dus een uiterlijk symbool van zijn bereidwilligheid, om zijn leven te geven en al zijn belangen en begeerten voor de zaak van de waarheid op te offeren. Het dier dat geofferd wordt, staat in feite voor het dierlijke in de mens, ofwel zijn lagere begeerten.

Vuurwerk en het Nieuwe Jaar

Velen van ons houden de traditie in ere om het oude jaar te beëindigen en het nieuwe jaar te beginnen middels het afsteken van vuurwerk, om zodoende "de duivels te verjagen". Heeft u ooit gemerkt welk gedrag uw hond, kat of andere dieren tentoonstellen als ze het geluid van vuurwerk horen? Als ze de kans krijgen, zoeken ze een schuilplaats in uw woning! Zullen de "duivels" niet dezelfde weg volgen? En als we deze "duivels" uit ons huis willen verjagen, moeten we het vuurwerk niet in ons huis afsteken?

Vuurwerk is verspilling van tijd, geld en van het milieu, en het verstoort vaak genoeg degenen die rust nodig hebben, vooral de ouderen en zieken. Hoe kunnen we ons voornemen een beter jaar te hebben, om beter te zijn voor onszelf, onze medemensen, de natuur en het milieu rondom ons, en dan het jaar starten door dit alles te schaden?

De enige manier om de duivels te verjagen, is door ons gedrag te evalueren. Welke slechte daden hebben we in het afgelopen jaar gedaan, die we zouden moeten nalaten? Hebben we genoeg gedaan in het voorbije jaar om een betere toekomst te hebben, zowel fysiek als spiritueel? Op welke punten dienen we onszelf te verbeteren?

Dit jaar is het vrijwel samenvallen van het jaarlijkse Offerfeest en het nieuwe jaar een speciale gebeurtenis. Het geeft ons de gelegenheid om nog dieper te gaan in het evalueren van onze daden. De Koran stelt dat alles wat wij vooruitsturen (onze daden) wordt vastgelegd, en ook hetgeen wij achterlaten voor het nageslacht. Ook wordt gesteld dat een ieder dient na te denken over hetgeen hij voortbrengt:

“Wij (Allah) schrijven op wat zij vooruit sturen, en hun voetsporen, en Wij houden alles bij in een helder Schrift” (36:12).

“O jullie die geloven, voldoe jullie plicht aan Allah, en laat iedere ziel overdenken wat zij vooruit stuurt voor de volgende dag, en voldoe jullie plicht aan Allah. Waarlijk is Allah Zich Bewust van wat jullie doen” (59:18).

Zoals reeds gezegd, is het moment van de jaarwisseling een goed moment voor ons om het één en ander te overdenken. Hebben wij in het afgelopen jaar voldoende gedaan, om het later beter te hebben, zowel in dit leven als daarna? En welk voorbeeld laten wij na voor ons nageslacht, als onze tijd hier op aarde voorbij is? Dat zijn de zaken waarop wij uiteindelijk beoordeeld zullen worden.
