Progress of Truth and Righteousness

Individual progress is the concern of every Muslim while collective progress relates to a particular section of people or community or the Muslims as a whole.

Apart from these, however, prayer opens path for another kind of progress also. This is the progress of the Islamic religion, of truth and righteousness. Progress of an individual or of a community as a whole is incomplete without an earnest desire for the development of truth and righteousness along with it. Just as an individual progress, if not subordinated to collective progress, is imperfect, similarly collective progress not subordinated to truth and righteousness, becomes a nuisance to the world.

So many nations who failed to subordinate their progress to truth and righteousness not only proved to be a source of trouble for the world, but eventually became a thing of the past. The fleeting progress of the Fascist and the Nazi parties bears testimony to this observation. They sacrificed all principles on the altar of brute force and wiped all thoughts of truth and righteousness out of existence.

It is a fact that all efforts of progress today are concentrated on national progress and the development of the spirit of truth and righteousness is an empty talk. Islam has sought to instill deeply into the hearts of men a real desire for the progress of truth and righteousness or the progress of Islamic faith by means of prayer.

Vooruitgang van waarheid en rechtschapenheid

Individuele vooruitgang is de zorg van iedere moslim, terwijl collectieve vooruitgang betrekking heeft op een specifieke groep van mensen, op de gemeenschap of op de moslims als geheel.

Het gebed opent ook het pad tot een andere soort van vooruitgang. Dit is de vooruitgang van de islamitische godsdienst, van waarheid en rechtschapenheid. De vooruitgang van een individu of van een gemeenschap als geheel is incompleet zonder een oprecht verlangen voor een ontwikkeling van waarheid en rechtschapenheid, die daarmee gepaard gaat. Net zoals individuele vooruitgang onvolmaakt is indien die niet ondergeschikt wordt gemaakt aan collectieve vooruitgang, zo wordt ook collectieve vooruitgang een last voor de wereld als die niet ondergeschikt wordt gemaakt aan waarheid en rechtschapenheid.

Vele naties, die er niet in slaagden hun vooruitgang ondergeschikt te maken aan waarheid en rechtschapenheid, bleken niet alleen een bron van moeilijkheden te zijn voor de wereld, maar verdwenen uiteindelijk zelf van het toneel. De kortstondige vooruitgang van de fascistische en nazistische partijen getuigt van deze waarneming. Zij offerden alle beginselen op aan het altaar van bruut geweld en veegden alle gedachten van waarheid en rechtschapenheid van de aardbodem.

Het is een feit dat alle inspanningen voor vooruitgang tegenwoordig gericht zijn op nationale vooruitgang. Ontwikkeling van de geest van waarheid en rechtschapenheid zijn slechts lege woorden. De Islam heeft getracht om diep in de harten van de mensen een werkelijk verlangen in te prenten voor de vooruitgang van waarheid en rechtschapenheid, ofwel de vooruitgang van de Islam door middel van het gebed.
