"There is an indefinable mysterious power that pervades everything, I feel it though I do not see it. It is this unseen power which makes itself felt and yet defies all proof, because it is so unlike all that I perceive through my senses. It transcends the senses. But it is possible to reason out the existence of God to a limited extent. Even in ordinary affairs we know that people do not always know who rules or why and how He rules and yet they know that there is a power that certainly rules. [...]

I do feel [...] that there is orderliness in the universe, there is an unalterable law governing everything and every being that exists or lives. [...]

I do dimly perceive that whilst everything around me is ever changing, ever dying there is underlying all that change a living power that is changeless, that holds all together, that creates, dissolves and recreates. That informing power of spirit is God, and since nothing else that I see merely through the senses can or will persist, He alone is.

And is this power benevolent or malevolent? I see it as purely benevolent, for I can see that in the midst of death life persists, in the midst of untruth truth persists, in the midst of darkness light persists. Hence I gather that God is life, truth, light. He is love. He is the supreme Good. But He is no God who merely satisfies the intellect, if He ever does. God to be God must rule the heart and transform it. He must express himself in every smallest act of His votary. This can only be done through a definite realization, more real than the five senses can ever produce. Sense perceptions can be and often are false and deceptive, however real they may appear to us. Where there is realization outside the senses it is infallible. It is proved not by extraneous evidence but in the transformed conduct and character of those who have felt the real presence of God within. Such testimony is to be found in the experiences of an unbroken line of prophets and sages in all countries and climes. To reject this evidence is to deny oneself. This realization is preceded by an immovable faith.

He who would in his own person test the fact of God's presence can do so by a living faith and since faith itself cannot be proved by extraneous evidence the safest course is to believe in the [...] supremacy of the moral law, the law of truth and love. Exercise of faith will be the safest where there is a clear determination summarily to reject all that is contrary to truth and love. I confess that I have no argument to convince through reason. Faith transcends reason. [...]."

"Er is een ondefinieerbare mysterieuze kracht waarvan alles doordrongen is, ik voel het hoewel ik het niet zie. Het is deze ongeziene kracht die zichzelf laat voelen en alle bewijskracht uitdaagt, omdat het zo anders is dan alles dat ik via mijn zintuigen waarneem. Het overstijgt de zintuigen. Maar het is mogelijk om het bestaan van God tot op zekere hoogte te beredeneren. Zelfs in de normale wereld is het zo dat mensen vaak niet weten wie hun regeerder is of waarom/hoe hij regeert, maar ze weten dat er een macht is die regeert. [...]

Ik voel […] dat er orde heerst in het universum, er is een onveranderlijke wet die heerst over alles dat bestaat of leeft. [...]

Ik merk – terwijl alles om me heen continu verandert of sterft – dat onder alles dat verandert een levende Macht is die niet verandert, Die alles bijeenhoudt, Die schept, vernietigt en herschept. Die bezielende kracht is God, en aangezien niets dat ik via de zintuigen waarneem zal blijven bestaan, zal slechts Hij blijven bestaan.

En is deze Macht weldadig of kwaadwillig? Ik zie het als puur weldadig, omdat ik kan zien dat tussen de dood leven bestaat, dat tussen de onwaarheid waarheid bestaat, dat in de duisternis licht bestaat. Hieruit leid ik af dat God Leven, Waarheid en Licht is. Hij is Liefde. Hij is de Opperste Goedheid. Maar hij is geen God die slechts het intellect tevreden stelt. God moet over het hart heersen en het omvormen. Hij moet Zichzelf uitdrukken in elke handeling van Zijn dienaar. Dit kan slechts geschieden door een volledige zelfrealisatie, veel werkelijker dan de vijf zintuigen ooit zullen kunnen bereiken. Waarnemingen van de zintuigen zijn vaak onwaar en bedrieglijk, hoe echt ze ons ook mogen lijken. Zelfrealisatie buiten de zintuigen om is onfeilbaar. Dit wordt niet door verstandelijk bewijs aangetoond, maar door het omgevormde gedrag en karakter van degenen die de ware aanwezigheid van God in zich hebben gevoeld. Deze getuigenis kan worden gevonden in de ervaringen van een ononderbroken lijn van profeten en wijzen in alle landen. Het ontkennen van dit bewijs is het ontkennen van zichzelf. Deze zelfrealisatie wordt voorafgegaan door een onwrikbaar geloof.

Hij die zelf het bestaan van God's aanwezigheid wil aantonen, kan dat doen door een levend geloof. Aangezien geloof zelf niet kan worden aangetoond door verstandelijk bewijs, is de veiligste weg om te geloven in de […] overheersing van de morele wet, de wet van waarheid en liefde. Het uitoefenen van geloof kan het best geschieden door vastberaden te zijn om alles, dat tegen waarheid en liefde ingaat, te verwerpen. Ik beken dat ik geen reden heb om via verstandelijke redenering overtuigd te raken. Geloof overstijgt rede. […].”
